Day's range
The highest and lowest price reached in one day's time.
Deferred load
Future sales charge that fund may charge as a fee at time of redemption (investor exit). Common in traditional mutual funds, rare in ETFs.
DIAMONDS
Shares in an ETF, Diamonds Trust Series I, that track the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The fund is structured as a unit investment trust.
Discount to NAV
Unlike regular open-end mutual funds, which are bought and sold directly from the fund company at the net asset value (NAV) of their portfolio securities, ETFs and closed-end funds trade at prices determined by the market forces of supply and demand. A fund that trades at a price less than its NAV is said to trade at a discount to its NAV.
Dividend
The cash payment per share made by the company to its shareholders every quarter. It is usually the part of profits that was not reinvested in the company. Dividends are taxed as income, not capital gains.
Dividend yield
A company's declared dividends per share as a percentage of its current share price.
Dollar cost averaging
Investment strategy of making steady fixed investments (monthly for example) to a mutual fund. Helpful to maintain savings discipline and smooth out market swings from investor's perspective.
